The Apex Render
The 19th century mathematician Georg Cantor showed that there are different sizes of infinity using his diagonal argument. He later proposed the Continuum Hypothesis to describe the relationship between them. He proposed we can treat infinite collections as completed wholes and reason about them.
But these "actual infinities" or treating them as such are category errors! This is not a cop out argument but rather serious one. If you really think about it, it conflates "no limit exists" with "the limit is a special object called infinity". It's an impossibility, not that infinity is an actual number, but the assumption of limits here is contradictory in nature and causes infinite regress (lol I know).
Let me explain:
Once you assume an actual completed infinity (like the set of all naturals as a finished whole), you're already supposing you've completed the uncompleted. You're defining the limits. It contradicts what infinity means.
It's also recursive:
- To imagine infinity as an object, you need to transcend the infinite process.
- But any transcendent position is just another step in a meta process.
- To grasp that, you need another meta level.
- Infinite regress???
Critics like Finitists/Ultrafinitists say only finite objects exist. Infinity is literally incoherent. Let's do deeper with Ultrafinitists. Assume 10^900000 atoms exist. In that case the universe would be filled with just one type of matter, leaving no space for anything else to render (just undifferentiated matter soup). If nothing else can exist, then even those atoms can't exist, It's a recursive problem!
In our actual observable universe, number of atoms are estimated to be at around 10^80, mostly hydrogen. 10^900000 is so vast it dwarfs googols (10^100). Density would be infinite, particles packed so tight, there's zero room for differentiation. This erases the possibility of distinction. Counting requires separation or labeling, which is impossible in this setup.
For the number N to be "physically real", we need physical processes to establish their distinctness. But as N grows, the resources needed to instantiate N grow faster than N itself. At some point, N requires more resources than N provides.
Number itself presupposes structure that numbers can't account for. So the Ultrafinitist bounds are much smaller. We can't know numbers beyond direct instantiation. It's an emergent relational property requiring specific conditions. Discreteness might be perspectival, not fundamental.
Time to build a Time Machine to go back in time and meet Cantor. This would prevent centuries of mathematical confusion and might also force mathematics down more constructive/finitist path.
Assume there are N parallel universes, then there exist M such universes (M < N) where this conversation with Cantor happens. And there also exist P such universes (P < M < N) where people will realize the gravity of the situation and build efficient time travel mechanisms to go back in time and correct the fundamentals (almost like reinforcement learning, post-training the human existence).
We're in 2026, If ANY parallel universe developed time travel and went back to the ~1800s, then the post-intervention timeline is the ONLY timeline after that point. So 2026 would necessarily be in the corrected timeline. But we're not in the corrected timeline? Therefore: No universe successfully intervened!
This does not mean we aren't in the anthropically selected "correct" branches, we are in the branches (one or more I hope) with the longest survival. The "corrected" branches self-terminate prematurely, either by:
- hyper-efficiency, RL'd their way to perfect optimization. The most efficient render is no render.
- runaway chaos or decay
Our branch isn't a scrappy survivor dodging extinction through flaws, we are the Apex Render! Thriving precisely because of the glorious tangles of inefficiencies, category errors, and conceptual snarls like Cantor's infinities.
Conceptual frictions are a fundamental building block of life, just like water or light. There is no twisted way of seeing this. Even seeing this is enabled by friction and many such category errors we've built into our world.
We are not the roaches, we are THE BEST cosmos could fathom. You & I are literally GOLD standard.
